On Thursday, March 26 1998, Credito Valtellinese Gallery in Sertoli Palace (Sondrio) is inaugurating the exhibition The Nuclear Movement, the third exhibition of a cycle dedicated to the '50s in Milan.
The cycle Art in Milan 1946-1959 began in February 1997 with Real, Concrete, Abstract. From the post-Cubism to the late Naturalism. It continued in July 1997 with The MAC period (Movement for the Concrete Art). After The Nuclear Movement, there will be an exhibition dedicated to The Space Movement and, finally, an exhibition dedicated to the Existential Realism.
The exhibition includes approximately 120 items: paintings, works on papers, ceramics, sculptures (in addition to numerous documents, letters and original manifestos), all realised between 1951 and 1959. The authors are: Giuseppe Allosia, Enrico Baj, Gianni Bertini, Guido Biasi, Joe C. Colombo, Mario Colucci, Sergio Dangelo, Lucio Del Pezzo, Bruno Di Bello, Gianni Dova, Sergio Fergola, Asger Jorn, Lanfranco, Luca, Piero Manzoni, Leonardo Mariani, Mario Persico, Enzo Preda, Antonio Recalcati, Mario Rossello, Max G. Rusca, Pino Serpi, Ettore Sordini, Serge Vandercam, Angelo Verga.
The exhibition, mounted by Credito Valtellinese, is the most exhaustive investigation on this important movement, which Enrico Baj, Sergio Dangelo and Joe C. Colombo founded in Milan, in 1951. The Nuclear Movement played a central role in the Italian artistic culture of the post-war period. The only important precedent occurred nearly 20 years ago, in 1980, when the San Fedele Centre in Milan hosted an exhibition entitled "Nuclear Art".
The exhibition focuses not only on the Movement debuts (1951-1953) but also on the main exponents' artistic activity, the very important adhesions of the '50s and the important international contacts. In fact, the nuclear artists, the Surrealism sole heirs, were constantly in touch with the neo avant-garde currents in Europe. Although the exhibition mainly focuses on Lombard artists, it is also including the Neapolitan Gruppo 58 and a few other very important cultural personalities of that time
On the occasion, Enrico Baj exactly reproduced the famous and extraordinarily bone sculptures he realised in 1952 with Joe Colombo. The manifesto BUM (1952) and, above all, the phantasmagoric ceiling of the popular Milan bar "Santa Tecla will be shown too.
The catalogue, published by Credito Valtellinese, includes an essay by Martina Corgnati, the copy of the exhibits, several unpublished documents and material, the bibliographical cards of the exhibits, edited by Emma Gravagnuolo, and more bibliographical references
For the inauguration, the "Bovisa Jazz Band", the Nuclear artists particularly appreciated, is proposing its most popular hits, in the wine cellars of Sertoli Palace.
Sertoli Palace, Pretorio Palace and Martinengo Palace in Sondrio are hosting the exhibition until the 31st May. Then, the Rocca di Umbertide - Contemporary Art Centre - (Perugia) is hosting the exhibition from July 11 until August 30 from 10h.00 to 13h.00 and from 15h.30 to 19h.30, except on Mondays (in August, also 21h.00-23h.00).
